Kenya’s “Big Five”—Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, and Rhinoceros—were originally named by colonial hunters as the most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Today, these iconic mammals are the ultimate goals for safari-goers, and Kenya offers several prime locations across the country to spot them.
The Big Five Species & Where to Find Them:
• Lion (Simba): The undisputed king of the savanna is easiest to spot lounging in the grass or hunting plains game. The Masai Mara National Reserve boasts one of the highest densities of lions in Africa.
• Elephant (Tembo/Ndovu): These gentle giants roam in large herds across several parks. Amboseli National Park is world-famous for its massive elephant populations framed by the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.
• Leopard (Chui): The most elusive and solitary of the Big Five, leopards are nocturnal, tree-dwelling cats. Your best chances of spotting one are in the riverine forests of the Masai Mara National Reserve or Samburu National Reserve.
• Rhinoceros (Kifaru): Kenya is a leader in black and white rhino conservation. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Lake Nakuru National Park are top-tier sanctuaries to safely observe both endangered species.
• Cape Buffalo (Nyati): Known for their unpredictable temperament and massive curved horns, these formidable herbivores travel in large herds. They are abundant in the Masai Mara, Tsavo East and West National Parks, and Amboseli.
